Dutch windmills in Kinderdijk
Categorized in The Netherlands
Kinderdijk in the Netherlands, near Rotterdam, is a place steeped in history that is ideal for a stroll in the Dutch countryside, set in a lush, UNESCO-listed green environment.
We visited Kinderdijk twice, in 2022 and 2024. Each time, we were amazed by this very natural and well-preserved place offering a unique panorama of windmills, emblematic of Holland, engineering marvels from the 17th century!
Where to park to see the Kinderdijk windmills?
Firstly, we advise you to avoid the parking indicated by the signs. This parking is expensive (€9.50 per car in 2024) and small. We parked along the road and very close to an easily accessible path that takes us directly to the heart of the mills: Free parking to see the Kinderdijk windmills.
An emblem of Holland, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Kinderdijk windmills have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
As you enter this rural area bordered by canals, you can admire windmills in an exceptional state of preservation although some date back to 1730.
These technological marvels of Dutch windmills have shaped the landscape of this country, and visiting Kinderdijk allows you to realize how, in the 17th century, humans managed to tame the forces of nature.
However, it should be noted that most of these windmills are now either homes or private properties and are not open to visitors.
You can enter the Gorinchem mill (30 minutes by car) if visiting a windmill fascinates you!
The Kinderdijk windmills still operate
The most astonishing thing is, of course, that these windmills still operate, and on windy days, they start turning, offering an extraordinary spectacle.
The 19 windmills of Kinderdijk have been carefully restored by their owners and provide a wonderful testimony to the Netherlands' past.
Their usefulness is well-known, transforming wheat into flour. But did you know that the Kinderdijk windmills also help regulate water in the polder canals, thus preserving the surroundings from floods?
Observe wildlife at Kinderdijk
In addition to the windmills that stand in this very natural place, we loved observing the wildlife at Kinderdijk. Horses, geese, duck families, and other farm animals can be easily spotted, lending this place a very authentic, rural charm, peaceful and natural.
