Gorinchem
Categorized in The Netherlands
During our journey in Holland in April 2024, we wanted to visit (once again) Kinderdijk to rediscover its windmills.
During the trip on the A15 highway, we spotted the small town of Gorinchem. Its restaurants and some photos really made us want to stop there for a meal on a terrace, a good beer, and a stroll by the water.
We feel like we've discovered a hidden treasure of Holland because this town isn't recommended by travelers, yet it exudes a very family-friendly and authentic atmosphere thanks to its narrow streets lined with traditional buildings where families stroll on weekends, on foot or by bike.
In summary, we really recommend visiting this town of Gorinchem, which seems to be an undiscovered gem of Holland.
Discover Gorinchem, an underrated town
Once we arrived in Gorinchem, we parked at the Paardenwater parking lot at the entrance of the town.
We then walked up the Paardenwater street to the large square in the city center where the Gorcums Museum is located, a museum about the local history of the city that we didn't visit because we prefer the outdoors.
Then we got lost in the alleyways until we reached the Lingehaven marina. Not far away are large green spaces perfect for a walk by the water, all the way to the Strandje Buiten de Waterpoort beach.
The walk along the Merwede river is very pleasant as you can admire the barges and sailboats gliding on very calm waters, giving the place a very relaxing atmosphere.
From the banks of the Merwede river, you can observe the island of Groesplaat across. It is a nature reserve.
